The story is called Boys on the Bus and explores themes of male violence and women’s hair.

The Bristol Festival of Ideas is pleased to present a discussion with the celebrated writer Nawal El Saadawi to mark the launch of new editions of some of her classic works, published by Zed Books. Her powerful and hypnotic novels – including Woman at Point Zero and God Dies By the Nile – tackle religion, love and female emancipation in the Middle East while her book The Hidden Face of Eve is a non-fiction account of female oppression in the Arab world, which was inspired by her experiences as a doctor in villages around Egypt. The Financial Times has described her as ‘The most influential feminist thinker in the Arab world over the past half-century.’
She talks about her work as a writer, her involvement in campaigns for women’s rights and social justice, and her life in Egypt.

We’re really happy to promote this fabulous exhibition raising money for Kinergy, a Bristol counselling service for survivors of sexual abuse and rape.
Organised by Clare Lowe and Penny Tristram, here’s the blurb:
An art exhibition and happening with free life drawing, comedy, and storytelling. Some sale proceeds go to Kinergy , a Bristol counselling service for survivors of sexual abuse and rape.
Come and be immersed in the world of Grimm Sisters. On our opening night, marvel and interact with:
-Fairytale Life drawing with the Fabulous Faun – materials provided
-Tall Tales from Audrey Heartbyrne’s A-Z of men
During the week, and learn storytelling the DARK way, with Grimm Sister Clare Lowe. Entry is free but donations for performers and classes are welcome.
The Grimm Sisters’ Book of Household Tales is an art exhibition and happening by Hamilton House artists Clare Lowe and Penny Tristram. This exhibition, which crosses the boundaries between painting and the graphic novel, turns the comic book narrative into a 3D, interactive experience.
Clare’s work is the story of Red Ridinghood’s Womb. This autobiographical story is based in reality and twisted into an unrecognisable tale. Locked inside a womb, the narrator takes you through a sad tale of denial and violence. Half the proceeds of any book or print sold by Clare will be going to Kinergy, a counselling service for survivors of sexual abuse and rape in Bristol.
Penny’s work has bright, fun elements which will act as a foil to the dark themes in Clare’s work. Russian dolls, and brides in various forms invite you to get lost in a world of nostalgia and fantasy.

The exhibition is open to the public until 24th October, from 10am-8.30pm each weekday and 10am-4.30pm at weekends.
