The Salon Reading List

Thank you to everyone who came on Wednesday night to share their favourite works by women writers. It was so inspiring and full of new discoveries!

Here’s a reading list of the women we read and discussed.

Ada, Gertrude Stein

Stein’s portrait of her wife, Alice B Toklas, it tells the story of a woman who tells stories and finds love and happiness.

Realism for the Cause of Future Revolution, Kathy Acker

The punk writer muses on a painting, giving her own unique and modern take on its depiction.

Wislawa Szymborska, Miracle Fair

The Polish poet who uses simple and spare language to discuss big concepts. Beautiful!

Ventimiglia, Joanna Walsh

A woman travels from the South of France to Italy and reflects on a break up. A beautiful exploration of psycho geography.

Niccolo Rising, Dorothy Dunnett

The beginning of a multi book epic, following the life of an ambitious young man in Renaissance Europe.

Ancillary Justice, Ann Leckie

This sci-fi novel takes place in a world where there are no gender markers and everyone is referred to as ‘she’ or ‘her’ – pushing the boundaries of how we read sex and gender.

We also had a bit of bell hooks and finished with Lady Lazarus by Sylvia Plath.
