Women sweep the boards at the Costa Prize!

Women writers have won all five category prizes at the Costa Book Awards.

This IS newsworthy. Simply because so often literature prizes are so male dominated (hence the former Orange Prize) – as are literature festival line-ups (hence our festival). In fact, research conducted by UK Feminista in 2010 found that only 30% of Costa Book Awards winners were women, and 68% of nominees were men.

The winners are:

Dotter of her Father’s Eyes, by Mary Talbot

Bring up the Bodies, by Hilary Mantel

The Innocents, by Francesca Segal

The Overhaul, by Kathleen Jamie

Maggot Moon, by Sally Gardner

Well done to all!
